What we collect

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Just the info you give us, and basic stuff your browser sends. No mystery data hoovering.

We collect three buckets of information:

  • Information you provide directly β€” name, email, address, the answers you enter while building a document, payment method, and anything you share with an attorney over chat. You decide what to share; we don't pull from other sources.
  • Automatic technical data β€” IP address, browser type, device, and how you move through the site. We use this to keep accounts secure and to find UX dead-ends.
  • Communications β€” your messages with our team and your attorney, so we can refer back when you ask follow-up questions.

If a question feels too invasive β€” skip it. We'll let you know if a field is legally required for your document.

Β§02

How we use it

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

To draft your documents, route them to an attorney, and email you the occasional product update. That's it.

Your information is used to:

  • Build the documents you ask us to build.
  • Get them reviewed by a licensed attorney in your state.
  • Communicate with you about your account and your documents.
  • Improve the product (in aggregated, de-identified ways).
  • Comply with applicable laws and respond to lawful requests.

We do not use your data to train AI models that any third party can access, and we never sell it for advertising. Period.

Β§03

Who we share it with

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Your reviewing attorney, payment processor, and a handful of plumbing vendors. Never advertisers. Never "data partners."

We share information only as needed to operate the service:

  • Your reviewing attorney β€” the one assigned to review your document in your state.
  • Service providers β€” payment processing (Stripe), email delivery, cloud hosting (Vercel + Supabase), all under strict data-protection contracts.
  • Legal requirements β€” if we receive a valid subpoena or court order, we'll comply, and we'll notify you if legally allowed.
  • Business transfers β€” if Legal Friend is ever acquired, the buyer must honor this policy or give you 60 days to delete your account before changing it.

We do not share data with advertisers, data brokers, social platforms, or analytics partners that profile users across sites.

Β§04

Storage & security

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Encrypted at rest, encrypted in transit. Servers in the US. Bank-grade controls.

All data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.3. We use SOC-2-aligned hosting providers, strict role-based access controls, and audit logs of every employee access.

We retain your documents for as long as your account is active, plus 7 years afterward (the standard estate-planning retention window). You can request earlier deletion at any time.

Despite our best efforts, no system is 100% secure. If we ever experience a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you within 72 hours.

Β§05

Your rights & choices

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Download, edit, or delete your data anytime. Email privacy@legalfriend.com and a human responds within 30 days.

Depending on where you live (CA, EU, UK, and a growing list of US states), you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we have about you.
  • Correct anything that's inaccurate.
  • Delete your account and the data tied to it.
  • Export your data in a portable format (PDF + JSON).
  • Object to certain processing.
  • Opt out of marketing emails β€” every email has a one-click unsubscribe.

To exercise any of these, email privacy@legalfriend.com or use the controls in your Profile & settings. We respond within 30 days, often much faster.

Β§06

Cookies & analytics

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Strictly-necessary cookies only. No third-party tracking. No advertising pixels.

We use a handful of essential cookies to keep you signed in and remember your draft progress. We use Google Analytics in aggregated form to understand which features people use; you can opt out via your browser settings.

You won't find Facebook Pixel or retargeting tags on this site. If our marketing site ever uses an analytics cookie that requires consent, we'll show a banner first.

Β§07

Children's privacy

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Service is 18+. We don't collect data from kids.

Legal Friend is intended for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided data, contact privacy@legalfriend.com and we'll delete it promptly.

Important: when you name minor beneficiaries or guardians in your documents, that information is provided by you as the adult account holder β€” not by the minor directly.

Β§08

Changes to this policy

βœ‹
IN PLAIN ENGLISH

We'll email you about meaningful changes 30 days before they take effect.

We may update this policy from time to time. For meaningful changes (anything affecting how we use, share, or store your data), we'll email account holders at least 30 days before the new version takes effect.

Routine clarifications (typo fixes, clearer wording) take effect on publication and don't require notification.
